Phoebe the Pig was sitting exactly where Katie had left her, slung unceremoniously on to the rocking chair in her bedroom. She had some friends to chat to but was bored of staring at the same four walls.
I wonder if Katie has put her packed lunch into her school bag yet? She jumped off the chair and walked over to investigate. Yum, yum, she sniffed, cheese and pickle sandwiches my favourite! She jumped into the bag and just as she was about to tuck in, she was launched into thin air as Katie swiftly picked up her bag!
Katie was late for school yet again. “Bye mummy, see you later” she shouted as she rushed out of the front door and started to run for the bus. Poor Phoebe was being tossed around from one end of her bag to the other, being battered by school books in the process. I don’t think I like this, I wish I was back at home she thought feeling rather bruised. As Katie found her seat on the bus, Phoebe heaved a sigh of relief and pushed open the bag slightly with her nose to see what was happening. I didn’t realise children could be so noisy she thought as they were all talking nineteen to the dozen, every child trying to speak over the next and none of them actually listening to anyone else. She ducked back down just in case anyone spotted her. She was hard to miss as she was bright pink and extremely round.
After what seemed like an eternity, she was then subjected to more battering of books whilst Katie ran to her first lesson. Why is Katie never on time?, thought Phoebe, it would be a lot less painful for me if she walked everywhere.
Suddenly a hand dived into the bag as Katie grabbed one of her books. Phoebe was quick enough to duck out of the way. Katie was having a double session of mathematics and after 15 minutes of listening to some boring man explaining how to work out fractions and equations, Phoebe turned her attention once more towards the cheese and pickle sandwiches. I’ll just have a little nibble, I’m sure Katie won’t notice! Before she knew it though they had all been eaten. Oh dear!
The rest of the morning was quite uneventful until suddenly the bag was once again whisked into the air and taken into another room. Oh what lovely smells thought Phoebe and poked her nose once more out of the bag. She was now sitting in the school canteen where there were trays and trays full of yummy food. Poor Katie only has a packed lunch, how boring thought Phoebe and then guiltily remembered she had gobbled up her sandwiches! Katie opened her bag to take out her lunch box and was astonished to see her favourite pink pig sitting there looking up at her. Oh what a lovely surprise, you can sit here and share my sandwiches if you like giggled Katie. She fumbled round in her lunch box and couldn’t find them. “Oh dear, mummy must have forgotten to put them in” she said, as she looked at Phoebe forlornly.
It was at that point she noticed the crumbs round Phoebe’s mouth and the pickle down her front. and a few sorry looking crumbs at the bottom of her sandwich box.
“Oh Phoebe”, you didn’t did you? She then remembered she was only a soft toy but sometimes she seemed so real to Katie. They must have fallen out of my bag whilst I was running. What other explanation could there be???
Peter was feeling very sad one day. His owner Simon and his family were moving house. Peter didn’t like change and there was nothing he liked more than to sit downstairs on his favourite window sill watching the world go by.
Simon was really excited though as his bedroom was going to be much bigger so there would be more room for his toys. “Don’t worry Peter, I will find a special little place for you to sit” he whispered.
At last, the big day was here and Peter was getting more and more nervous. I know, he thought, I will just nip down to check if there is anything left in the freezer. It might take my mind off things if I have a little snack. Even though it had been defrosted there might have been a stray fish finger lurking in one of the drawers. Into the kitchen he waddled, first making sure that there was no-one around. The freezer was still standing there in the kitchen with the door open to make sure it had totally defrosted so up he jumped right into the bottom drawer. There was nothing there so he climbed into the middle one. “Hoorah” he whooped as he landed on a packet of fish fingers. Simon’s mum must have forgotten to empty this one in her hurry to pack everything up. He was just wondering how on earth he could open the box when suddenly the door was slammed shut and he was plunged into darkness.
He could hear deep voices outside - they must be the removal men he thought. Just at that moment the freezer was tipped up as it was put on to a trolley and wheeled towards the removal van. Peter fell head over heels and the pack of fish fingers that had seemed so appealing before landed right on top of him. “Ouch” he said flapping his wings with annoyance! He pulled himself together and listened to what was happening outside, any thoughts of eating the fish fingers long gone. After a little while the van pulled away with the contents of the house within it. Peter felt every little bump in the road as the van sped towards its’ destination. The journey came to an end with a sudden jolt and Peter skidded across to the other side of the drawer. Once again Peter heard the same deep voices as the freezer was unloaded. Last in first out thankfully!
Peter felt himself being lifted up and had the sensation of floating on air as the freezer was taken through to the new kitchen. In the distance he heard the sound of Simon crying and his mummy trying to comfort him. “I’m sure there is a good explanation” he heard her say. “Peter has probably been put in a drawer somewhere safe, he can’t be very far away”. Oh how right you are thought Peter, feeling really miserable that he had caused his little friend to be so upset. After a while Peter started to feel quite chilly. I hope they have put the freezer back on he thought as he had started to get rather hot having been trapped for so long. Suddenly he was blinded by light as the door was pulled open. To cheer Simon up his mummy had bought him some of his favourite chocolate chip ice cream and she was going to put it away. She pulled open the drawer with such vigour that Peter came tumbling out and skidded across the kitchen floor on the ice that had formed on his little blue coat. He sat slumped in the corner feeling very sorry for himself. “Come here quickly Simon” shouted Peter’s mummy, “look who I have found”. Simon came running into the kitchen and saw his little friend sitting in a puddle of melted ice. He scooped him up grinning from ear to ear. “I can’t imagine who would have put him in the freezer” said Simon’s mother puzzled. “Perhaps he climbed in by himself?” suggested Simon. “Honestly, your imagination runs away with you sometimes, she replied laughing, you’ll be saying next that he was looking for some fish fingers for his tea…………..!”
Coral the Clownfish belonged to a little girl called Sally. Coral was a pretty little thing and very brightly coloured. You certainly couldn’t miss her in a crowd. She was sitting on the settee downstairs where Sally had put her and was gazing at the goldfish swimming in his large tank. He didn’t seem to have a care in the world – in and out of the bridge he went and through the weeds. There was even a diver in there to keep him company (a pretend one of course!). Every so often he would show off by jumping out of the water and landing in the tank again with a splash, each time showering Coral with some drips.
I wish I could swim thought Coral wistfully. It must feel nice to be able to float through the water like that. Oh well, I will have to make do with just getting splashed instead she laughed to herself.
All of a sudden she was scooped up by Sally’s mummy. “I don’t know”, she said crossly, “Sally really is untidy. Why must she leave her toys everywhere?” She gathered the rest of Sally’s toys up and took them all upstairs into her bedroom.
“Whilst you are putting your toys away I will run you a nice hot bath” she said to Sally. It was Sunday night which meant bath night. “Okay mummy” she said sheepishly, “I’ll make sure I put them away tidily”.
She placed Coral carefully on her pillow. It was a big feather pillow and Coral was engulfed by it. Oh this feels comfortable she thought to herself and started to yawn. I’ll just have 40 winks and with that she drifted off to sleep to the sound of running water in the distance.
Coral’s dreams were always very vivid and before long she was swimming alongside lots of other beautiful fish in the deep blue sea. As the waves swelled higher and higher the faster she went. Oh what a lovely feeling she thought as she jumped through the air and flipped over before diving into the sea again with a splash. After a while though she felt quite exhausted so she lay on her back and just floated bobbing up and down on the waves. This is the life she thought dreamily but suddenly her world turned upside down and she was spinning around and around until she didn’t know where she was.
“Coral, oh Coral, she could hear a voice calling to her. She woke up with a start only to find herself sitting at the bottom of Sally’s bath surrounded by bubbles and feeling very wet indeed. Sally wrapped her in a towel and shouted at her brother Simon. “How could you be so mean?” she asked. “What harm has Coral ever done to you?” she cried. “I didn’t put here in there” he answered indignantly, “I just pulled out the plug to stop her from drowning”.
“Well if you didn’t I wonder who did?” Sally retorted.
Clarissa the Cow Goes to the Zoo
Sophie and her sister Amelia were both very excited. Today was the day that their parents were taking them to the Zoo. It was a special treat for Sophie as it was her 6th birthday. She was taking her favourite soft toy Clarissa with her and couldn’t wait to take her to see all the animals.
They all climbed into the car and set off looking forward to the days adventures. Before long they reached their destination. There was a long line of traffic waiting to go in and the girls sat there fidgeting on the back seat impatiently. Before very long though they went through the gates and parked the car.
“Well girls, where do you want to go first?” asked their father. “Oh can we go and see the monkeys, can we, can we………?” asked Sophie even before Amelia had chance to say anything. She was jumping up and down with excitement. “Okay, the monkeys it is then” he said laughing.
“Hey Sophie”, shouted Amelia, “don’t forget Clarissa”. “Oh thanks”, she replied. She picked up Clarissa and whisked her up on to her shoulders. This is cool thought Clarissa – I can see everything from up here. She was used to being dragged around by one arm and to have a birds eye view of everything was a real treat.
Before long they reached the monkeys’ enclosure. The girls shouted and laughed as they watched the wild antics of the monkeys swinging from branch to branch and doing somersaults. Clarissa wasn’t quite as keen as they looked quite frightening to her and made far too much noise.
After a while the girls got bored of watching the monkeys and on they went to visit some of the other animals. “Look Amelia over there” called Sophie pointing at the giraffes. They walked over to their enclosure. “I can’t believe how tall they are” said Sophie. One of the giraffes sauntered gracefully over to the fence where they were standing and licked its’ lips. “It must be hungry”, laughed Amelia, “I’m sure he’s looking at Clarissa”. As soon as Clarissa heard that her eyes nearly popped out of her head with fright. “Don’t be mean”, replied Sophie, quickly taking Clarissa off her shoulders and clutching her protectively in her arms. “She is only a soft toy so they might have a nibble at her” laughed Amelia. “Stop winding your sister up” said their mother and suggested that they go and have their picnic as she could see Sophie’s bottom lip starting to quiver. If you are both good we can go to the Pets Corner afterwards which both girls readily agreed to.
They all walked over to the picnic area and carefully laid out the rug. “Oohh yummy” said the girls, looking at the tasty spread before them. Their mother had packed sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps, salad and some delicious looking cakes. “Tuck in everyone” she said. They didn’t need telling twice and all dived in greedily. Clarissa had been propped up against a tree, forgotten for the time being as Sophie concentrated on which sandwich she was going to eat first.
Clarissa turned round and spotted a signpost with an arrow pointing to the Pets Corner. She was looking forward to going there, probably as much as the girls were. That’s where all the smaller animals were kept and weren’t quite as scary as the rest of the animals in the Zoo.
Suddenly, she was whisked into the air as a small boy came running past and grabbed her by the tail. “Oh my, oh my, what’s happening?” she cried. None of her family had noticed and Clarissa was helplessly flying through the air seeing the world spinning around. Within a couple of minutes though the little boy stopped suddenly and dropped Clarissa with a bump on her head. She looked up in a bit of a daze and noticed the sign for Pets Corner. Oh wow, she thought, forgetting about her frightening experience. I can wait here for Sophie and with that she sat against the wall and watched the rabbits. After a little while though she began to feel a bit peckish and thought longingly of the sandwiches and cakes that her family were tucking into at that very moment. “I wonder what rabbits eat” she thought. She suddenly noticed a big juicy carrot that a little girl was poking through the wire for them.
A little while later Sophie and her family arrived at Pets Corner. Sophie was inconsolable as she had lost Clarissa. “This is the worst birthday ever” she sobbed. “Never mind darling, said her mother trying to stop her crying, she will turn up somewhere”. Meanwhile, the little boy who had snatched Clarissa looked across at Sophie and sheepishly admitted that he had picked her up as a prank. “I would have brought her back, honestly” he said. All of a sudden Sophie shouted with excitement – “there’s Clarissa sitting over there in the rabbits’ pen”. She started to scramble over to retrieve her before they started chewing her. “Hey, said the little boy, I didn’t put her in there - I dropped her by the door at the entrance”. “Well then how did she get there?” asked Sophie, as she picked her up. “Perhaps she was hungry he laughed as he looked at the half eaten carrot”. With that Sophie glared at the little boy and walked off indeed wondering how Clarissa had ended up amongst the rabbits. Who will ever know??...……
